Food Review: Oh Dough, Fort

Oh Dough, FortWith their sweet-savoury combo and ability to alleviate gloomy moods, we can easily make a case for cookies as the ultimate comfort food. But for those who are eaters not bakers, thus far the closest thing to a homemade batch has been Sweetish House Mafia’s crumbly confections. Last month, we got another worthy contender in the form on Oh Dough, located opposite Burma Burma in Fort. Opened by Le Cordon Bleu London grad Ritika Chawla, who bakes the round biscuits at a kitchen close by, the cookie store offers a range of flavours with as good a strike rate as SHM.

Chawla’s compact Parisian-meets-Irani café, with black, white and grey patterned tiles, may not look particularly unique but it’s aesthetically appealing. The white walled store has just eight bentwood chairs between the two marble-topped tables and counter, along side which is a shelf stacked with whole cakes and round tins decorated with BEST buses and air balloons, which are used as gift boxes. A red clock, surrounded by steel whisks that resemble the rays of the sun, adds a pop of colour. The most vibrant element is the cookies, of which Oh Dough offers eight flavours and like any self-respecting cookie monster, we ordered all of them.

This meant sacrificing tummy space that we could have otherwise used to try their artisanal ice creams, tea, coffee and cakes. But we as munched our way through our order, we had little regret. Among the standouts are their Callebaut-enriched triple chocolate (Rs110), a mix of dark, milk and white chocolate, and chocolate chip (Rs85), both of which we loved because they were rich but not at all cloying. However, we found the white chocolate-infused red velvet (Rs85) to be on the sweeter side. The fluorescent green hue of the pistachio (Rs110) belied the savoury scrumptiousness inside its soft crumb and crunchy exterior. The pistachio, incidentally, is among their three eggless cookies, which include variations of the chocolate chip and triple chocolate.

The hazelnut praline (Rs135) is our pick for the perfect accompaniment to a cuppa but the oatmeal and raisin (Rs85) and S’mores (Rs135) while good weren’t the best we’ve ever had. The sole disappointment was the Chipzel (Rs135), a hybrid pretzel-topped cookie made with potato wafers, chocolate and coffee, the whole of which was less than the sum of its parts. Since we had to wash it all down with something, we decided to have more cookies in liquid form. The chocochip cookie shake (Rs290) was thick, creamy and delicious as opposed to the regular chocolate shake (Rs190), which was a tad too milky and fairly standard in taste. Given that we aren’t particularly fond of Burma Burma’s gelatinous desserts, we think Oh Dough’s location is super convenient, but that’s certainly not the only reason we’ll be repeat customers.
