PHOTOGRAPHY NCPA Photography Festival at the NCPA Piramal Gallery

MUSIC One World Many Musics with Strings In the Wind at the NCPA Experimental Theatre

THEATRE Ibsen Festival Season 2 at the NCPA
The second edition of this annual event organised by Surnai Theatre will comprise two plays by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen that will be performed in multiple languages. Maranat Kharokhar…Jag Jagate is director Rasika Agashe’s Marathi version of Ibsen’s final drama When We Dead Awaken (Experimental Theatre on Saturday at 7pm). In the play, famous sculptor Arnold Rubek has lost his creative energy ever since he parted ways with his muse Irene. He meets her years later at a resort in Norway where he’s staying with his young wife Maja. Irene claims that Arnold devastated her by stealing her soul.
Abhilash Pillai will direct an English, Malayalam and Hindi version of Peer Gynt (Experimental Theatre on Sunday at 4.30pm). Peer is the impoverished son of a man who wasted away the family wealth on a lavish life. His mother hopes that he will restore their fortune but Peer is more interested in telling stories and wandering the world. Theatre veteran and co-founder of Surnai K. K. Raina will helm a production Peer Ghani (Tata Theatre on Sunday at 7pm), a Hindustani version of Peer Gynt set in Kashmir in the 1980s. The final day of the festival, Monday, October 26, will have two sets of talks during which directors will speak about working with Ibsen. Additionally, Astri Ghosh, a translator at the Centre of Ibsen Studies in the University of Oslo and actor and Surnai co-founder Ila Arun will discuss translating and adapting Ibsen. Tickets for the Experimental Theatre shows, priced at Rs350 and Rs400 per head, and for the Tata Theatre show, priced at Rs400, Rs500 and Rs760 per head, are being sold on Bookmyshow.com. ART Unpacking the Studio: Celebrating the Jehangir Sabavala Bequest at Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation
This exhibition comprises the late artist’s paintings and personal articles such as diaries, sketchbooks and portfolios that were donated by his wife Shirin Sabavala to the Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation, which is housed inside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya. The show, which has been curated by Ranjit Hoskote, places Jehangir Sabavala’s work in the context of his artistic inspirations, his education in Mumbai, London and Paris, and his practice among his peers from the 1930s to the 1950s. Tickets to enter the museum are priced at Rs70 per head for visitors above the age of 12, Rs20 per head for children between the ages of five and 12 and Rs300 per head for foreigners above the age of 12.

The Bangladeshi artist’s debut solo show in India has works from two series of photographic prints: the recent When dead ships travel and an earlier body of work titled Metal Graves.
