Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2016 Picks: Monday, February 8 to Thursday, February 11

‘Aamchi Mumbai’ by Arjun Bahl of the St.Art India Foundation welcomes visitors to Rampart Row.

Our picks of events to attend during the next four days of the city’s largest and most popular neighbourhood cultural festival. Look out on Wednesday for our recommendations of what to catch on the closing weekend.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8
CHILDREN’S EVENTS
Wheel Pottery
Kids of all ages can attend this demonstration of how pots are made on the wheel, where they can also paint clay medallions.
When: Until Sunday, February 14, from 11am to 1pm and from 4pm to 7pm.
Where: Studio Potters’ Market.

How Pictures Tell A Story
Norwegian-Canadian animator Torill Kove, who won the Academy Award in 2007 for her short film The Danish Poet, will conduct a workshop on creating illustrations for children. The event is for adults.
When: Monday, February 8 at 11am.
Where: Somaiya Centre for Lifelong Learning.

COMEDY
Kunal Kamra + Raunaq Rajani + Vinay Sharma + Nishant Tanwar
The stand-up comedians will each present a set.

DANCE
Sukanya Kumar
The bharatanatyam dancer and choreogrpaher from Mumbai will present the Indian classical dance form with a twist.
When: Monday, February 8 at 6.45pm

Rare Grooves Dance Company
The city-based troupe will perform a mix of Latin street style, kizomba (an Angolan dance form), Dominican bachata and mambo.

THEATRE
Song of the Swan
Mumbai theatre group Knot Theatre’s play in English and Hindi uses kathakali and music to tell the story of Hans Christian Ostro, a Norwegian theatre artist who was one of the tourists abducted by Al-Faran militants in Kashmir in 1995.
When: Monday, February 8 at 7.30pm.
Where: Horniman Circle Garden.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9
COMEDY
Azeem Banatwalla + Deep Chhabria + Gaurav Kapoor + Sonali Thakker
The stand-up comedians will each present a set.

DANCE
Vishwatma by Kanaka Sabha Dance Ensemble
A kuchipudi recital choreographed by Siri Rama, the founder and director of the Kanaka Sabha dance institute in Mumbai.
When: Tuesday, February 9 at 6.10pm.
Where: Cross Maidan.

The Danceworx
Mumbai and Delhi dance company The Danceworx, which is helmed by choreographer Ashley Lobo, will blend styles such as jazz, classical ballet, contemporary and urban hip hop in their performance.

Eight Count Dance Company
A belly dancing demonstration by Urmila Thakkar and Sara Bade from Mumbai.

Soam: From My Thali To Yours
Cooks from the popular Gujarati restaurant in Babulnath will share recipes of some of its bestselling dishes including panki and winter speciality undhiyu.

HERITAGE TALK
Mills and Docks – Foundations of a Burgeoning Metropolis
Conservation architect Kruti Garg will present a talk that will trace the history of trade in Mumbai and the city’s emergence as the country’s financial capital.
When: Tuesday, February 9 at 2pm.
Where: Artists’ Centre.

LITERATURE
Is Everyone A Critic?
Film critics and writers Raja Sen, Rahul Desai, Akshay Manwani, Ganesh Matkari and Pragya Tiwari will discuss the significance of reviewing at a time when everyone on social media has an opinion.

Art and #WW3
American writer and artist Molly Crabapple and Raghu Karnad, author of Farthest Field: A Story of India’s Second World War, will discuss the effect of art and writing on activism and politics.

Rubik’s Cube Workshop
Kids, above eight, can learn tips on how to solve the puzzle.

Green Arts Workshop
Children, eight and above, will be taught how to make bowls from recycled paper.

Panchamahabhutam by Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya
Conceptualised and choreographed by mohiniattam dancer Kanak Rele, this performance will combine bharatanatyam, kathak and mohiniattam.

Bollywood Tadka by Mayuresh Wadkar of Dance India Dance and Nach Baliye
Dancer and TV talent show choreographer Mayuresh Wadkar will present a sequence of Bollywood dances through the ages.

FOOD & DRINK
The Science of Coffee With Emanuele Bargelli
During this workshop, coffee enthusiasts can pick up tips on how to brew their cuppa the Italian way from Italian food scientist Emanuele Bargelli, the organiser of the annual Festival della Scienza in Genova.
When: Wednesday, February 10 at 4pm.

HERITAGE TOURS
Cinematic Mumbai
This walk conducted by conservation architect Kruti Garg will show participants some of the sites that played an important role in the development of Mumbai’s theatre scene during the nineteenth century as well as spots that have featured prominently in Bollywood films.
When: Wednesday, February 10 at 4.30pm.
Where: The meeting point is Capitol Cinema (opposite Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, D. N. Road) at 4pm.

Hope Street Poets
Poetry readings by writers and poets Tishani Doshi, Adil Jussawalla, Rohinton Daruwala, Subhro Bandopadhyay, C. P. Herb Garden
Kids will be shown how vegetables are grown and explained the differences between edible and inedible leaves.

The Sangeet Natak Akademi Award recipient from Delhi will screen excerpts of films on renowned dancers such as Shanta Rao and Rukmini Devi.

The Art of Bread Making

Italian food scientist Emanuele Bargelli will demonstrate how to make focaccia with potato instead of flour.

HERITAGE TOURS
Libraries and the Growth of Institutions
Conducted by conservation architects Kruti Garg and Sanaeya Vandrewala, this walk will take participants, which will be restricted to 50 people, through Fort’s reading libraries, beginning at the J. N. Petit Library on D. N. Road and concluding at the David Sassoon Library on M. G. Road.
When: Thursday, February 11 at 3.30pm.
Where: The meeting point is the J. N. Petit Library on D. N. Road at 3.15pm.

LITERATURE
The Sita Effect
Writers Karthika Nair, Arshia Sattar and Samhita Arni will discuss female characters in Indian folklore.

THEATRE
Jaise Sookhe Hue Phool Kitabon Mein Milein
A literature buff discovers a collection of books in a library and is transported to a fantasy world in which writers read out their poems and tell their life stories. Directed by Nadira Zaheer Babbar, the play is in Hindu and Urdu.
