Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2016 Picks: Friday, February 12 to Sunday, February 14

As always, some of the most popular names on the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival schedule have been saved for the second weekend. Get there early (and catch the preceding performance) to increase your chances of getting a seat. Here are the events that promise to be worth the wait:

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12
CHILDREN’S EVENTS
Wheel Pottery
Kids of all ages can attend this demonstration of how pots are made on the wheel, where they can also paint clay medallions.
When: Until Sunday, February 14, from 11am to 1pm and from 4pm to 7pm.
Where: Studio Potters’ Market.

Why Draw When You Can Collage?
Israeli artist Hanoch Piven will conduct a workshop on illustrating kids’ books. The workshop is meant for adults.
When: Friday, February 12 at 10.30am and 5pm.
Where: Somaiya Centre for Lifelong Learning at 10.30am and Kitab Khana at 5pm.

Madhubani Art
Artist Maitri Dani will teach children, between seven and 12, how to draw Madhubani motifs on paper bags.
When: Friday, February 12 at 4pm.
Where: Front garden of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya.

DANCE
Instituto Di Cultura Di Mumbai
Italian dancer and choreographer Stefano Fardelli will conduct a contemporary dance demonstration and workshop.
When: Friday, February 12 at 4pm.
Where: Somaiya Centre for Lifelong Learning.

FOOD & DRINK
Pizza Making with Serafina
The pizzaiolos at Serafina, the Italian restaurant in Kala Ghoda, will teach participants the tricks of their trade.
When: Friday, February 12 at 4pm.
Where: Serafina.

San-cha: The Tea Diaries
Sanjay Kapur, the owner of Kala Ghoda tea boutique San-cha, will launch and conduct a tasting of the store’s new ‘Kala Ghoda’ blend of floral Darjeeling and Assam teas.
When: Friday, February 12 at 4pm.
Where: Westside.

HERITAGE TOURS
Heritage Bus Tour
This hour-long tour in an open-top double-decker bus through South Mumbai’s heritage areas will give participants a chance to see city monuments such as the Gateway of India, Taj Mahal Hotel, High Court, University of Mumbai and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus from an elevated viewing point. One pass per person can be collected from the help desk, located near Max Mueller Bhavan on K. Dubash Marg, between 2pm and 2.15pm for the 4.30pm ride and between 2.30pm and 2.45pm for the 5.45pm ride.
When: Friday, February 12 at 4.30pm and 5.45pm.
Where: The assembly point is Gate No.4 of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya at 4pm for the 4.30pm ride and 5.15pm for the 5.45pm ride.

Watchful Over Mumbai – Immortalised In Stone
Fifty participants will get to learn about the “makers and shapers” of Bombay on this walk conducted by conservation architects Kruti Garg and Sanaeya Vandrewala that will include a visit to the Asiatic Society Library.
When: Friday, February 12 at 4.30pm.
Where: The meeting point is outside Eros Cinema in Churchgate at 4.15pm.

LITERATURE
The Sharada Dwivedi Commemorative Lecture
Novelist Amit Chaudhuri will deliver a talk on the “deprofessionalisation of writers and other creative practitioners”. He will be in conversation with Indira Chandrasekhar, the editor of Out of Print magazine.
When: Friday, February 12 at 5pm.
Where: David Sassoon Library garden.

Tea and Tangra
Kolkata-residing writer Amit Chaudhuri, Mumbai filmmaker Rafeeq Ellias (who made a documentary on Kolkata’s Chinese community called The Legend of Fat Mama) and Kamalika Bose, an assistant professor at the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology in Ahmedabad (who has researched the architecture of Kolkata) and Mumbai writer Sifra Lentin will discuss Kolkata’s many communities.
When: Friday, February 12 at 7.30pm.

MUSIC
Nush Lewis
Mumbai singer-songwriter and harpist Anushka ‘Nush’ Lewis will perform tracks from her 2015 EP Fused.
When: Friday, February 12 at 6pm.
Where: Cross Maidan.

The Adil Manuel Collective
The city-based jazz fusion band led by guitarist and composer Adil Manuel will play a set.
When: Friday, February 12 at 8.10pm.
Where: Cross Maidan.

Prateek Kuhad
Delhi-based singer-songwriter Prateek Kuhad, who croons both English and Hindi tunes, will perform.
When: Friday, February 12 at 9pm.
Where: Cross Maidan.

THEATRE
In Stitches with Anuvab Pal and The Patchworks Ensemble
Stand-up comic Anuvab Pal and actors Puja Sarup and Sheena Khalid of The Patchworks Ensemble will perform routines on the themes of medicine and health. The show is one of the satellite events of the exhibition Tabiyat currently underway at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13
CHILDREN’S EVENTS
All Creatures Great and Small
Potter Kavita Gupta Merchant will conduct a clay modelling workshop for kids of all ages.

Let Stories Come Alive
Professional storyteller Ulka Mayur will introduce kids between the ages of four and 12 to a few lesser-known Indian folk tales.
When: Saturday, February 13 at noon.
Where: Front garden of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya.

World of Myths
Kids of all ages can listen to British professional storyteller Emily Hennessey narrate myths from around the world.
When: Saturday, February 13 at 5.30pm.

DANCE
Vivek Tamhankar
Catch a performance of Maharashtrian folk dances including waghya murali, shetkari and adivasi bhilau.
When: Saturday, February 13 at 6.05pm.
Where: Cross Maidan.

Street Stilletos by Mrigakshi Jaiswal
A troupe wearing gravity-defying heels will perform street style, jazz, funk and hip hop in a routine choreographed by Mumbai-based dancer Mrigakshi Jaiswal.
When: Saturday, February 13 at 7pm.
Where: Cross Maidan.

Dhrut by Sumeet Nagdev Dance Arts
A light and dance show featuring elements of kathak and contemporary dance by the Mumbai-based troupe.
When: Saturday, February 13 at 9.05pm.

FILM
From Africa to India: Sidi Music in the Indian Diaspora
Directed by Amy Catlin-Jairazbhoy, the documentary explores the music of the Sidi community.
When: Saturday, February 13 at 2.30pm.

FOOD & DRINK
Maria Goretti: From My Kitchen to Yours
The MTV VJ turned chef will demonstrate how to make orange zest cake and talk about launching a cook book.

Cooking with Sanjeev Kapoor
A masterclass by the TV chef, restaurateur and cookbook author.

Photographer Aditya Arya (who inherited his uncle, legendary lensman Kulwant Roy’s archive) and US couple Jerri Zbiral and Alan Teller (who found a box of images by an unknown, possibly American photographer and have been trying to find more information on the pictures) will talk about visual histories.
When: Saturday, February 13 at 5.30pm.

The Scenes We Made
Writer Shanta Gokhale, who edited the recently released book The Scenes We Made: An Oral History of Experimental Theatre in Mumbai, theatre actor and director Alyque Padamsee, film and theatre actor Akash Khurana and Sanjna Kapoor, founder of the arts organisation Junoon, will talk about the growth of theatre in the city from the 1950s to the 1980s.

MUSIC
Karsh Kale
New York-based electro-folk fusion multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Karsh Kale and his band will play the Mumbai leg of his ongoing tour of India to promote his new album Up.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14

The Art of Storytelling
British professional storyteller Emily Hennessey will conduct a workshop for adults.

Little Harmony and the J. B. Petit High School choirs
The two choirs will sing a variety of songs from Broadway numbers to hits by the Black Eyed Peas.

A screening of the documentary about tabla maestro Amir Hussain Khan, directed by Nitin Mahadar and narrated by Tom Alter.

Eat Clean, Go Lean with Karishma Sakhrani
Learn how to cook healthy from the Masterchef India 2015 finalist.

HERITAGE TOURS
Romancing the City with Mum’bikers
Conservation architect Kruti Garg and Firoza Suresh of Firefox Cycles will lead this bicycle ride through south Mumbai. Participants must get their own cycles.
When: Sunday, February 14, from 7am to 10.30am.
Where: The assembly point is outside Rhythm House music store in Kala Ghoda at 6.30am.

Hospitality in Nineteenth Century Bombay
This tour, conducted by conservation architect Kruti Garg, will attempt to give participants, which will be restricted to 50 people, a sense of the grandeur that was associated with Esplanade Mansion, the crumbling structure formerly known as the Watson’s Hotel.
When: Sunday, February 14 at 12.30pm.
Where: The assembly point is the Westside in Kala Ghoda at noon.
